Something Extraordinary

I have been expounding on the new world order, the shifting sands, the earthquake that is going to change everything that is in our near future.  wrote this morning about some long standing business ideas that are transforming alongside the big shift. He offers 8 reasons here and I am going to think about all of them but share just 3 in this post.

8 . Un-schooling trends.  – we are seeing all kinds of opportunities and systems rethinking the benefits of taking brilliant creative excited children and turning them into uniform, conformists who follow the sheep in front of them.

5. The fall of exaggerated consumerism. – I haven’t seen significant evidence of this trend but am hopeful for Tanaka’s idea of ” Lowsumerism, slow life and slow food are a few types of action being taken as we speak, pointing out the contradiction of how absurdly we have come to organize ourselves.” (even if I would need to make big changes in how I practice my life.

1. No one can stand the employment model any longer. – Are we seeing a return to artisans, artists, craftsmen, freelancers who balance their own skills and desires rather than being measured by how they endure the captivity of 9-5? Are we ready to embrace some joy and excitement by trading some false security?

Turning a Deaf Ear

After yesterday’s post, I received 5 emails from readers who said ” I don’t have any art to make”. This was sad and telling.

I am told, by my beloved,  that I can exhibit ‘selective hearing’ – only being aware of what I want to hear. This can be rude and hurtful if done with other people but may be helpful if you can hone it for conversations you are having with yourself.

What if my heart was screaming “say something, do something, this isn’t right” and I tuned  out the voice? If the gift of fear was warning me to “stay away from this scheme” and I ignored it, the consequences might be serious. “You are remarkable” comes into my head and I deny it. ” Bob, try again” is the encouragement I ignore.

It is tricky business selecting which of my voices I should honor and trust and which are the voices of procrastination, dishonesty, anxiety. How do I know it is anticipation speaking and not naivete?

Lewis Smedes says “Seeing reality for what it is is what we call discernment. The work of discernment is very hard.” It is hard  given the judgments of the world. Unless I can discern, I cannot be certain I am acting in the highest and best manner. “However, when I feel aware, expanded and full of love, I must be doing something right (and conversely, when I feel bored, impatient and regretful I am not listening to the highest voice).”~ Sal Rachelle

Discernment is an act of awareness, whereas judgment as an act of ego. Practicing discernment  is like everything else and contrary to the adage it doesn’t simply make it perfect. Practice only makes permanent, if there isn’t reflection and accountability. Doing this practice alone is possible but can be earned and learned more easily and more quickly with a coach. I know that I have been assisted by the wisdom, challenge and accountability of a formal coach and my clients have added remarkable value and insights  to their lives through feedback, accountability, courageous goals, tension  and some systems thinking.

As always, I am available and open to discussing how coaching might add value to your life. Contact bob@remarkablepeople.ca

Are You Having Enough Fun? Likely Not.

A life filled with joy is a life worth living. Abundance of fun need not be expensive. Doing something, anything, many things that make you smile every day can even be free.

If you set a personal mission for today to recognize the ‘fun opportunity” at least once an hour, you will have a dozen or more reasons to smile (that you may have missed).

You can be childlike without being childish. A child always wants to have fun. Ask yourself, ‘Am I having fun?’  Christopher Meloni

If you need permission (you don’t) I am giving it to you. Be childlike in your pursuit of fun. and take a moment to relish in it. It seems to be infectious.

Becoming a Legend

On the weekend I was visiting the Surf Museum in Oceanside California, scouting out their vintage, gently used shirt collection and had a great conversation with a volunteer. We talked about retail and plovers and waves and seismic sensors. She asked ” Do you have a membership? If you are a legend, over 62, it only costs $25″. I wasn’t offended by her assertion that I look that old but rather taken by the category.

I have heard senior, retired person, retiree, golden ager, old timer, pensioner, geriatric and old fart but never legend. I love the idea and maybe I have enough time to truly qualify. I have 629 days until October 17, 2016 when I turn 62 years old.

I love the category of Legend but just surviving 22,642 days doesn’t seem like enough of an accomplishment to warrant the title.

Every day I am committed to consciously consider how my actions, intentions, ideas, words, work and play might contribute to leading a larger-than-life story that is worthy of admiration. Even if I don’t get there, it will be a blast trying. I can’t even imagine the possibilities that are awaiting now that I have put this statement out to the world.

Make Today Legendary,
