Are You Living Your Life?

Are you living your life or merely passing through it? The world presents each of us with this great gift, every day. Each morning that I continue to breathe, there are possibilities – new challenging and exciting. Putting my head down, burying my head in the sand, eyes shut tightly doesn’t change the world but it changes how I live in it.

In a few hours another page turns and an arbitrary marker (January 1,2016) begins. This is the best time, or at least as good as any to begin living your life to its fullest potential. In the first week of the new year – do 7 things for the first time, meet 7 people that you don’t know, walk 7 miles, read 7 chapters, share something 7 times, say “I love you” 7 times, celebrate 7 remarkable things.

May 2016 be filled with possibility, passion, prosperity, and problems in perfect proportion.

Focus on Your Strengths

Unless you are a tennis ball, you don’t want to be well rounded. Be the best Bob, Jane, Tanya, Diana, Mike, Jon, … you can be. You  have been given passion, learned and mastered skills. There is one thing or many things that you are remarkable at. There  are also things that you stink at. I stink at anything that requires extreme attention to detail – double entry book keeping, baking, jigsaw puzzles.

remarkable slogan

I made the choice to focus on the stuff that energizes me, that inspires me, that I know I am really great at and reduce wherever possible the stinky stuff. I  don’t resent doing it but I know there is someone else who is much better and enjoys it.

Give yourself a break today and do more of the work that you are remarkable at and less of the stuff that someone else is amazing at doing. Unless you want to be smacked at 140 km/hr over a net, don’t strive to be mediocre at everything.

Make Yourself Remarkable Today,

Grow a Pair

I was going through some old articles and found Jessica Hagy post once again making some simple and interesting points in her Forbes article.  She suggests that there are 10 Simple Ways to Make Ourselves More Interesting. #9 is below with a short commentary. The link will open up page 2 but I am sure you can figure out what you need to do.

9. Grow a pair.

Bravery is needed to have contrary opinions and to take unexpected paths. If you’re not courageous, you’re going to be hanging around the water cooler, talking about the guy who actually is.

Take a moment and think about the three most interesting people that you personally know. Make a list.

What makes them interesting? Do they avoid important discussions? Do they allow others to take the lead on every project? When they express themselves, do they meekly, weakly make suggestions? or are they passionate, courageous, confident, and considerate?

On my list, all three know their values, speak their values, and live their values even when it isn’t easy, isn’t popular and may not even be an advantage to themselves. They are authentic and remarkable.

Would you like to be passionate and reasonable, outspoken and considerate, confident, courageous and reasonable? What would be the first step that you need to take? Don’t worry about the 2nd, 3rd, 10th, 127th steps, what would be the first step? Write it down.

Now take it. Take that step right now. Write a comment. Start a blog. Make a phone call. Send an email. Go for a run. Whatever came to your mind as the first step ` take it and tomorrow, evaluate and ask the same question. ” Today, what would be the first step, I need to take to be the remarkable person that I am.”

Military Buff

osprey

We were out on a whale watch tour a couple of weeks ago, off the coast of southern California. There was lots of military exercises happening near the coast at Oceanside and we saw helicopters landing and taking off from a carrier. They were twin rotor helicopters and a young boy on the ship said they were V22 Ospreys which I researched and he was right. He said “he was a bit of a military buff”. Of course that got me thinking – what am I a buff of? Are buffs needed in the days of unlimited, immediate information?

I am a big picture, impatient, imperfectionist with an action bias so being a detail oriented, specialist isn’t my style but I do love the trivia of it all and have been known to say buffy things “like according to Kant” or ” is that quote ipsissima verba?”. I don’t know if that is smartassery or buffery?

I love that I can ask Google Now any question and get an answer but I am still enamored with people who carry the minutia around in their heads because they are passionate about the subject.

Are you a buff? What subject area are you passionate about?
