The Power of a Myth

Mythology exists in all aspects of our life. We believe we are a country of intelligent, entrepreneurial, caring, radical individualists who come together to share our resources and skills and make the world a better place. It likely doesn’t matter where you live, The myth of people and place is pretty powerful. And there is some truth in every myth.
We listen to our Genesis stories; as people, cities, companies and celebrate them by rewriting them to fit our current expectations, mores, attitudes and regrets. The adaptability and flexibility of our stories reflects that we understand that they may never have happened but are definitely true.

My myths keep me safe, keep me calm, help me stay rooted and inspire me. I have absorbed some from my kin and their strange Scottish Scandinavian practices and history. I was taught some from my grandmother and mother that form the basis for my morality and responsibility. I have crafted a few myths myself so I am able to continue doing what I do and to justify my actions in the face of resistance. As the narratives become embedded they earn mythology status, for a time. They are relative to an audience that is predisposed to the lesson. Christians lean towards and love Christian narratives although most zealots would be uncomfortable with the myth reference since they see the stories as complete and inerrant.

There are myths about the glories of capitalism that supporters love and myths that deride and denigrate capitalism that detractors love. Myth – Under capitalism, anyone who works hard can succeed. Myth – Under capitalism only those with a silver spoon get to eat from the golden dish. Sometimes the myth is accepted by both perspectives but for completely different reasons. Myth – We are all in the same boat.

I was raised with a protestant work ethic with tinges of puritan morals so shaking those off and seeing the world with more joy, hope and optimism was a long process and there are days that the baggage rears its head as a defense mechanism against an idea, a party, a person who I disagree with. When I am struggling to understand I can twist and turn my personal narratives with all kinds of logical fallacies. I see injustice when none exists, I hear slander in feedback, I taste opposition in diversity but on the days that I trust and hope (another area of mythology) I grow in all those circumstances.

Myth, as a social construct, is most often destructive as we are seeing in a current election campaign. The myths of race, gender, ethnicity, orientation, money creates sides and factions. And when you choose a team or are picked for a team loyalty overwhelms our senses. I have found myself accepting and then defending something that didn’t sit right because it was part of the team’s narrative. Political parties and religious factions have notorious influence on the common sense and common decency of adherents. When the narrative creates a them and us, it is time to deconstruct it and hold it up to the brightest light because it is likely in service of an agenda that is self serving and selfish.

I love myths, ancient and modern. Like the heroes of ancient myths, modern superheroes have extraordinary powers. The most famous superhero is Superman, created by American cartoonists Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster in 1938. In comics and on radio, television, and movie screens, he fights for “truth, justice, and the American way,” using his powers of flight and incredible strength, powers he possesses because he is from another planet. Like most modern superheroes, Superman keeps his identity a secret and pretends to be an ordinary man. Such myths suggest that anyone can have unsuspected potential for heroism.

Are You Listening?

I need an audience. Without readers, my words fall on deaf ears- no matter how clever, important or irrelevant they seem to be. But do I need to earn the right to speak my truth into the world? Do I need a plan to cultivate listeners? Should I be writing less but better? More and more spontaneous?
When I began I was just writing for me. It was my process and it cleared my head and brought clarity to what I was thinking. Somewhere around post 125 I began to think about you, the reader, and what you were thinking. By number 500, I was focusing on appealing to a specific model reader (who I imagined was out there waiting for my next post). After 600 on makeityourproblem.com and a nearly daily shipping of content to other blogs and forums I realized that my ideas were being censored by an imaginary prospective subscriber. I was tempering my language and censoring ideas that were either too main street or too out of the park. Do all creatives begin to create what they imagine the world, their world, wants?

My mantra that remarkable people use their strengths to strengthen others when they embrace their personal responsibility rather and allow society to absolve them is the genesis of my musings and prose. I seem to have forgotten the motivation and mission. I want to significantly influence thousands of people in their journeys to living a ‘big life’. Are you influenced by these posts? Do you feel that you are living a bigger life, leaning towards being remarkable? Do you remember any of the past 600 posts or the calls to action in about half of them? Would you recall and act if the message was more compelling? Would a change of medium (video, podcast, animation) make a difference? What if the message was being created and delivered by someone else? would a different style be compelling? If this was always satirical would it be impactful?

This year there have been about 25,000 viewers to makeityourproblem.com. I don’t know if that can be considered significant. I sure don’t know if any or all found a gem or a germ they could take away. Maybe the numbers are to small and in order to influence thousands, I need to reach hundreds of thousands. Would you react differently if you knew that 100,000 other folks were ingesting and digesting the same content?

I am taking a chance on a Saturday to write about my secret hopes for this space and for the decisions that I make in my community. Honestly I am apprehensive being so vulnerable and insecure and afraid of rejection. There is a small part of me that hopes no one is listening and another part that is excited that there may be some of you who will reach out a provide honest feedback so I can improve.

Maybe the seasons are changing and as with all things this one has passed.

Cheers and Three Cheers,

Pushing the Boundaries

Every day I have opportunities to be better than yesterday. Different in some small way. Smarter in relationships. More patient in trying circumstances. More persistent in trying circumstances. On the days that I take small steps, I usually succeed. When I try to jump the shark and take one giant step I usually fail.

g you go through grows you

My life has been a small step, small step, side step, small step, back step, big step journey. Yet, there are times each day that I attempt a flying leap over the first or last crevice. I am lucky to grab the other side and fortunate when I don’t get hurt falling in the hole.

Are you taking small steps towards your 2016 goals? Are you aware of the opportunities that you face each day and the chance to do something slightly different/better?

I am back believing that all our boundaries are malleable and need testing in every situation. Take one more trip around the track, one more lap in the pool, one more email to a friend, one more glass of water and another serving of vegetables. Take another small step today, tomorrow and all your tomorrows.

Are Some Goals Unachievable?

Generally I would say all reasonable goals are achievable but just like the serenity prayer I have a discernment problem.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,The courage to change the things I can,And the wisdom to know the difference.  My problem is that haven’t mastered the wisdom part.im possible

I have been chasing some goals, that I still believe are reasonable but progress towards them has slowed or ceased. For example, I set a goal of running a sub 25 minute 5k. Seems possible even though 2 years ago I was running around 35 minutes and that I am not 61 years old. In the first few months my time fell and my pace went up. I plateaued at 30 minutes for a while and took up some coaching to break the next barrier. I can run under 29 most days and ran 27:35 in an October race but haven’t broke 28 minutes since.

I understand that there are so many circumstances at play – rest, nutrition, elevation, motivation, injury but I am disappointed that the progression hasn’t been on my schedule.

Should I let the disappointment deter me from chasing the goal – I don’t think so because the happiness is actually in the pursuit of stretch goals. (there is another circumstance – should I stretch before or after or both). Maybe what I am learning is that my other goals that I easily achieved were too easy.

How about you? Are you chasing goals that exceed your immediate grasp?

Make Today Remarkable, in the happiness of pursuit,

Different Perspective

I drove a thousand kilometers on US Interstate 15 on Sunday and it amazed me that what I thought was a safe following distance (at 129kmph) and someone else (many(all)) thought was a space that I left for them. It occurred to me that there are likely hundreds of other examples of my perception being different from someone else’s. I see change as invigorating you might see it as dreadful. My beloved sees salad roles as one of her favorite dishes and I see them as slimy and inedible.

I see people as capable and powerful. Many others see the same people as vulnerable and powerless. I see opportunity when others see threat and vise a versa.

How do I know we are seeing the same things, meaning the same things, agreeing or disagreeing on the same stuff. I think most of it is by communicating more and better.

That doesn’t help me on the Interstate but I am enjoying watching to see how long the vacuum takes before it sucks a car into the space.

Reboot, Recommit, Reorient

The beginning of a new month, a new season often stirs the promise of change in certain elements of our lives. “This is a good time to eat better and get more exercise”, ” I am going to get up an hour earlier every day and read a good book and make my lunch”, I need to listen to him/her more – things could be so much better”, ” I am going to volunteer”, “I am going to find love”, ” I am going to change things” First, let me tell you that you are remarkable, or at least remarkable is waiting to bloom in your life. Remarkable people live remarkable lives by recognizing their strengths and using them to strengthen themselves and others. That stirring that you are feeling is the remarkable you trying to break out of the mediocrity that the world tries to convince us is the best we can be. Every day we hear messages from big government, big business, big media, big charity that tell us “don’t worry your silly little head about that, we will take care of it.” In most cases the Big can’t, won’t and shouldn’t be responsible for actions, tasks, services that we are able to look after ourselves. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, ” I believe every person, given the opportunity and circumstances will take care of herself, his family and her community. But we need to let the remarkable you out, into the world where your small actions can make a big difference (in your life and those around you). Today’s challenge is to take a risk – take a small step or better yet a series of small steps towards the change you are seeking (even if it isn’t fully formed or understood yet). Taking action is always better than doing nothing. If the first step is a misstep or doesn’t quite hit the mark, we can adjust, amend, reverse but if we sit on our couch waiting for amazing to arrive – it will be a long wait and we won’t learn what the next step in the journey should be. I urge you accept the challenge and tell others how you did by jotting a comment. Next post will be about how you can fuel the journey with your passion. Make Today Remarkable and tell us how you did.

Strengthen Others

Remarkable people use their strengths to strengthen themselves and others.

Every day we are offered opportunities to do what we do well to improve ourselves and those around us. Mostly we miss the opportunity because we are focused on urgent rather than important. Strength training requires commitment and focus. For 24 hours practice being mindful of the present – live in the moment. Take time to appreciate the situation you find your self in and ask ” Is there something I know, I have, I can do that will make this better?

Make Today Remarkable for someone you don’t really know.

How do You add Value?

Are you an adder or a subtracter? Most of us add and subtract value every day. At the end of the day, what is your +/- rating? Are you giving excellence to your work, relationships and self?

Having a net positive day, week, life doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intention and action that is pointed to creating value. It requires persistence in the face of convenience. It requires character.

Just being aware that all our choices and actions have consequences, good or bad,  is a great first step. You can make a difference. Your decisions change you, change your relationships, change your relationships and change your world.

I am intentionally trying to be healthier. When I run, workout, play sports, walk, resist temptations I am taking positive steps toward living healthier. As I work to get healthier, others see my efforts. My relationship with my beloved, my kids, my family, my friends is improved when I feel better. My community doesn’t need to have space, resources or energy to devote to my care and can direct it where it is needed most. When I go to the gym today, eat more fruits and vegetables, moderate my vices I can add these to the positive side of my ledger.

When a client requests my services and I don’t do my best, I subtract. When one of my grandkids needs a receptive ear and I am there – I add. When I don’t react to being delayed in traffic or angrily curse at being cutoff – I add.

Are you up to a challenge? Would you observe as many of your intentions and actions as you can for the next 7 days and record whether they are positive or negative. Will you try to add value and excellence in every situation, for just the next 168 hours? If you are up to it, I would appreciate (and I am sure other readers would too) if you would comment on this post or associated tweet with #value and your total?

Make Today Remarkable. Make adding value your problem.

Trust

I get to make a lot of choices every day. I choose what I eat, when I sleep, where I go and how I get there. I choose how I feel in specific situations, why I say the things I do, who I listen to, and if I am going to live up to my expectations for myself. I choose to trust and then that choice becomes invisible.
Trust doesn’t mean that all my expectations of myself or others will be met. Trust doesn’t mean that I won’t be disappointed. Trust doesn’t mean that I am on moral high ground.
Trust is the frame that I choose, today, to wrap my life experiences, thoughts, and passions in.
It doesn’t make me gullible. It doesn’t deny me the right to question. It doesn’t close the discussion. Trust helps make the picture in the frame easier to see and maybe understand.

In a world where the distrust index continues to rise, I wonder if we can reverse the spiral by choosing to trust.

Children and Grandchildren

children

We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today. ~Stacia Tauscher

How do we honor our children and grandchildren regardless of their age?

– be a great listener (listen intently and listen globally to what is said and unsaid)

– be equitable ( try to bring what is needed to each child in each situation, not just their share, not  what they deserve but what they need)

– be a confidant ( keep the secrets that are shared unless danger is involved)

– be a reliable parent ( quality time only works if their is enough quantity time for the relationship to blossom)

A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer. ~Author Unknown

I am often surrounded by people who think they are experts. I am often one of them, myself.  My expertise blinds me with bias and blinkers me to options. I hope to learn to be more like my grandchildren who ask with curiousity not problem solving at the heart.

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there. – Will Rogers
