It is Sunday where I live and the sun is shining. I don’t really need a reason or an excuse to go for a walk. Since the 10,000 step craze started we usually add 10 to 20k to the counter. It isn’t just the act of putting one foot in front of the other (that is important for physical and mental health) and it isn’t just about the destination (10k steps) however much I focus on getting to where I am going. It can and should be about the stroll.
What do your senses tell you about the journey. Is the light glinting off water? Are there buds on the trees? Robins, waxwings, nuthatches and chickadees are singing. You might even hear a warbler. I always enjoy the smells of the season. There is a wift of campfire and a hint of bbq in the air. The yeast plan and the brewery are steaming away and it is clear that a skunk passed by (or someone using something medicinal).
My feet appreciate the pathway but relish the softness of the earth when I escape the prescribed route and trek across the grass. The breeze on my face is still cool but the sun is endeavoring to raise the temperature and there is a dampness in the middle of my back.
I pick up my pace and can feel my heart raise it’s tempo. My breath is deeper and my lungs love the expansion of deeper inhaling. I chance to meet someone who I haven’t seen in years and a conversation, at first tentative and then intimate ensues. I notice changes in the neighbourhood that aren’t visible at a different speed (driving or biking).
The walk is good for me. Good for my soul. It can be good for you too.
Make Today Remarkable,by taking a walk,
A continuation from yesterday’s post regarding Kouzes and Posner Five Practices from ” Leadership Challenge”.
I begin by confessing that I am not really a process guy. I tend towards variation on a theme and so I try not walk home the same way twice in a row. I still get home but following Dr Seuss’s advice I get to say;”And that is a story that no one can beat And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street.,
That said, challenging the process can still be daunting. The bounded rationality of success however limited fixes the path. Process is just the path that others have discovered that takes us from A to R supposedly efficiently and effectively. But locking into ABCDEF…R reduces the possibility of discovery, excitement and improvement. Maybe ABDLR works and we create something valuable and unexpected along the way.
Go for a meandering walk today and see if you come back with a story like;
Sunday; a day of rest for some. A day to regenerate and get ready for the week for others. A day I suggest you get outside for at least an hour – push away from the TV, the computer, the table and turn off your devices and leave them at home. Walk, run, bike, paddle, ski, snowshoe or create movement in some other way. Get moving for an hour. Let the rhythm of the activity clear your head and then your brain can begin healing your body and soul.
Take today as a gift and unwrap some fresh air and adventure.
Are you living your life or merely passing through it? The world presents each of us with this great gift, every day. Each morning that I continue to breathe, there are possibilities – new challenging and exciting. Putting my head down, burying my head in the sand, eyes shut tightly doesn’t change the world but it changes how I live in it.
In a few hours another page turns and an arbitrary marker (January 1,2016) begins. This is the best time, or at least as good as any to begin living your life to its fullest potential. In the first week of the new year – do 7 things for the first time, meet 7 people that you don’t know, walk 7 miles, read 7 chapters, share something 7 times, say “I love you” 7 times, celebrate 7 remarkable things.
May 2016 be filled with possibility, passion, prosperity, and problems in perfect proportion.
