Grab a Pen and Paper

If you are reading this today, it is too late. Let’s look towards tomorrow. Before you crawl into bed tonight, stop and write down your 3 goals for tomorrow. Put the list of three things somewhere where you will see it first thing in the morning. I always try to follow Mark Twain’s advice around goals; “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Once I get the biggest, least appealing goal out of the way – often within the first hour, I am on track to accomplish even more.

Back to the night time list. If you write meaningless or vague goals that don’t inspire you, they will likely get left undone or you won’t be able to recognize when you have achieved them. Goals beget goals like steps turn into a movement. Start with something smaller, and meaningful that begins where you are. There is no point in creating an unrealistic goal of doing 100 push-ups if you haven’t ever done 1. But ” I will complete 10 push-ups before 9am and another 10 push-ups before noon” may be doable and specific enough to succeed. This type of goal can progress by adding reps (10 3xs a day) or more push-ups (11,12,20…) or becoming habitual 2×10 every day.

I prefer to set goals around my strengths. So reading 150 books in a year was feasible and I am well on my way to exceeding the target. I needed to break the big goal into smaller chunks. ” I will read 100 pages of “Superstitions” by Bruce M Hood before 9pm tomorrow” is specific enough for me but if my schedule and lifestyle was busier, I might need to ” read 100 pages of “Superstitions” by Bruce M Hood between noon and 1pm and on my 40 minute commute home, tomorrow”. Knowing how you succeed and what will work for you is the path to capitalizing on the opportunity.

I am a morning person and a, usually up about 5am so getting stuff done early in the day works for me. If you tend to be a night owl, that might be better. I can’t draw a circle, freehand, but I can write 1500 words a day so if I have a goal of shring a position, an idea or a message, I play to my strong points.

If I have a monthly monetary expectations like $5000 in sales commissions, or $3000 in new business, or $10,000 return on investment, I need to set daily goals that will keep me on track to do the work that leads to the money. ” I will make 5 follow-up calls to clients between 10am and 11:30am”, ” I will prospect 10 new leads by cold calling 60 names from the company list tomorrow afternoon. I will keep calling until I have reached the 60 calls.”

When you set a good goal and can’t ever achieve it, ask what isn’t working. Maybe you are playing against tendencies, against best practices, or against your best interests. Or the goal doesn’t really have meaning for you. Or you don’t have the resources or tools to complete the tasks. Evaluate and adapt the goal or drop it.

Start tonight by writing your goals for tomorrow and then wake up ready to get started.

Scribbling Meaning

It is a struggle to stay motivated, to keep plowing ahead, to continue typing words … if no one is ever going to read them or care that they were written. It is like scribbling on a balloon and releasing it to the wind. You know it is being carried aloft and maybe afar but when it bursts and scatters fragments over the hills, it will just be scribbles without context or meaning. It feels like signing in the shower or having a good dream. It sounds good and feels good inside your head but when the water stops or something stirs you, it is gone without appreciation; gone forever.

So if the squiggles that form letters are transformed into words and then sentences don’y find a receptive audience, do they evaporate? Do they sit waiting for someone, anyone, to find them and read them and give them purpose? Or do they have meaning because they are articulated in a semi permanent script and not floating between synapses as unformed imaginations?

Do the ideas shaped by the written words need to find a reader’s voice (inside or outside) and provoke a conversation (inside or outside) or spur an idea or create a dissonance to reach its purpose? I am not sure where meaning resides or when it is created so I continue to play one of the 1000 monkeys hoping that somewhere a story is be created and retold.

Well On My Way

January 10 and I am well on my way on some of my 52 in 52 list. I have read 2 books this month 2/52, I watched 3 independent films 3/52, I am at 35k so slightly behind 152k/month goal but being in paradise hasn’t helped in other areas.

My writing projects have stalled (still churning out work but novel and play have fallen into the doldrums). The planned social media launch hasn’t happened.I am maintaining my weight but not doing a great job with nutrition choices.

I am declaring a January 11 reboot and starting anew in the morning. Today I am going to celebrate my blessings, my accomplishments and the opportunities the day brings starting with sunshine and an 8 am bird walk.

Make Sunday Remarkable and reboot tomorrow id necessary,

Health is more than Being Healthy

My training schedule for this week seems a stretch.

40 min x-train
50 min run with 8 * 1min hard 2 min rest in the middle
35 min x-train
65 min run with 6*20 second uphill strides
40 min run or 70 min x-train
Even after today’s cross training, the workload seems like A LOT.
It isn’t that the amount of time or energy seems. It is my head getting in the way saying ” this is too hard, you can’t do. You should just quit”. It is the ‘lizard brain’ according to Seth Godin that is getting in my way.
It happens often. When I am starting a new project, trying to eat healthier, making a commitment the voice in my head says ” Give up”.
That is why I need to focus, at the start,  on getting through the first 6 minutes of running, the first 500 words, the first veggie snack (rather than chocolate) not the destination.  Finishing a hard run or 3000 words is the impetus for the voice and until I make some early strides it can sound like a shrieking child. But if I focus and push forward to a marker, it becomes quiet, until tomorrow. I have never got to a place where the  complaining, nagging, negativity is gone but I have crested a mental divide where the lizard brain gives up more quickly.
Focus today on finding a marker for your mental health.
Make Today Remarkable, by quieting the voice, for a little while.

Spam, Cheese, Veggie Burger or Nuts

As I near the end of month one in my commitment to write and post every day, I  wonder what the content is really about; really intended to do. Am I so vain as to believe that every phrase uttered by my mouth or pecked by my fingers is worthy of the ears of dedicated or disinterested readers? Is it all just to feed my ego that needs stroking, imagined or real? Am I just an eccentric old man? Yes,yes and yes.

But mostly I hope it is received as a provocation, a call to something different. I worry that we live in a world mired to our knees in mediocrity, settling for second/fifteenth best. If I don’t expect and demand more of myself, I feed the bland beige blur. Today I am considering how the platform of this blog and fadedrecollections.com could help reach the goals that all the posts this month pointed to. I haven’t discovered and answer but the struggle is better than complacency, isn’t it?

Seth Godin’s ” What to do When it’s Your Turn” and his longstanding practice of shipping daily set me on this journey. Maybe a reread is in order.

My request today is that if you have something to say, add it here and let me and other readers what is rumbling around your life.

Resist the Convenience.
